The Holy Roman Catholic Church and Constantine

I've always been completely fascinated by Roman history. I haven't seen the BBC piece called "The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire" until today. It's very long at 14 episodes, 30 minutes per episode. The link below is of Constantine; a former pagan Roman Emperor converting to the Roman Catholic Church.

I recommend all 14 episodes, but the below 10 of 14 represents the birth of the first Christian Roman Emperor:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ifur2iTDKA

It's extremely interesting, and the piece touches quite a bit on how Christianity is introduced to Rome.

Saint Rose (Patron of Vanity)

Saint Rose was the first Canonized Saint of the Americas born in the year 1586 A.D. Rose is often depicted in images holding a rose in one hand and a Crucifix in the other. St. Rose was always a beautiful yet humble and pious woman. As a young child she would nail her hair to a wall to keep from falling asleep in prayer. Rose was quite serious about her Faith in Christ as she constantly begged her parents to allow her to join the Convent. Being somewhat reasonable, they allowed her to practice as a Dominican Tertiary and did not bother her as she endlessly prayed, while afflicting herself with the wounds of Jesus Christ.
Saint Rose was affectionately called the "Little Rose" as her mother was upset that she cut her beautiful hair. Rose believed her hair was a symbol of vanity and wanted nothing to do with it. In turn, Rose's mother forced her to wear a headdress made of roses. Underneath Saint Rose would wear a crown of nails in emulation of Christ. Not only was Saint Rose exceptionally devout, she was also given visions of The Infant Christ, The Virgin Mother and several Angels. Her visions are described as the Mystical Marriage.
Amongst her Divine Visions, Rose was able to heal the sick and grow flowers out of season. Many people living near her believed she was a witch. Her family also condemned her and sent her away. Rose died at the age of 31 from a strange ailment that was never diagosed.

Prayer of Saint Rita:

By the singular merits of thy childhood,
By thy perfect union with the Divine Will,
By thy heroic sufferings during thy married life,
By the consolation thou didst experience at the conversion of thy husband,
By the sacrifice of thy children rather than see them grievously offend God,
By thy miraculous entrance into the covenant,
By thy severe penances and thrice daily bloody scourgings,
By the suffering caused by the wound thou didst receive from the thorn of the Crucified Savior,
By the divine love which consumed thy heart,
By that remarkable devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, on which alone thou didst exist for four years,
By the happiness with which thou didst part from thy trials to join thy Divine Spouse,
By the perfect example thou gavest to people of every state of life.

Prayer of St. Teresa (Novena to the Little Flower - Day 1):
O Heavenly Father, Who in Thine ineffable goodness didst place in the soul of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus the precious treasure of sanctifying grace, and didst grant her ever to keep it in the midst of earthly dangers, we pray Thee to grant to us for our part the happiness of never losing this inestimable gift whereby we become Thine adopted children, the brothers and sisters of Thy Son Jesus, the temples of the Holy Spirit and the heirs of Heaven.

Enable us, to this end, carefully to avoid mortal sin which would rob us of this grace more to be desired than all the wealth of the world, to fly the occasions of sin, and to resist temptation.

We implore these graces through the intercession of the one who was ever Thy faithful child and whose memory we venerate.

Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus, who would have preferred to die rather than lose God's grace, vouchsafe to obtain for us all the help necessary to avoid the misfortune of committing mortal sin, incompatible with this divine grace. Fast Food Forward?

When I walk into a Mcdonalds, I'm usually greeted by a young man or woman learning the ropes about work. We all worked in fast food, bussed tables, or had entry level jobs which taught us work ethic and the value of the dollar.

None of us expected to get rich off these jobs. We were making minimum wage. We expected to move onto another job which would teach us and pay us more.

Entry level jobs aren't designed to become a career. There's alot of turnover, and a spot is almost always open for the next batch of high school students.

The problem we're facing now is that for some, the entry level job is becoming a career.

In comes the grassroots protest movement: Fastfood Forward.

Fastfood Forward is made up of around 200 fastfood employees. Their demands?
  • $15 an hour
  • Unionization
  • Full Benefits
What's wrong with this picture?

The same people protesting could find themselves out of a job. If Mcdonalds had to pay someone $15 an hour, provide full benefits, and deal with a Union, theyre going to be extremely selective of who they hire. It will be a golden privilege to work at Mcdonalds.

The employees at this new Mcdonalds will most likely be qualified salespeople. Mcdonalds will have to generate significant revenue to pay these kinds of wages.

Competition will be fierce. Resumes will come from all over. People will move from one state to another to take advantage of Mcdonald's job opportunities.

Unemployment rates for high school kids will rise dramatically. It will be much harder for a high school kid to find a job, and competition will be fierce on that as well.

Prices will go up. A value meal won't be $7 - $8 dollars. It will be more like $15 - $16.

We're already re-thinking fast food because we're trying to eat healthier. We're not going to Mcdonalds if prices are too high.

There's already several politicians supporting the protests. I'm sure these protests are going to expand as time goes on. There will be unintended consequences for this, and we're all going to end up paying for it if this happens.

Falling off the Fiscal Cliff

John Stossel did a piece on the spending of the Federal Government. Below is the link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdgyJ6styW4

It's called the Money Hole. I'm shocked by how politicians spend our hard-earned money.

Some of these "grants" include:
  • Testing how fast shrimp run on treadmills
  • Massive Alpaca farming tax deductions
  • Robots that fold laundry
  • And many many more
Why are we paying for this stuff?

Government just loves to spend money. It's easy to spend other people's money, especially when you can print more when you've gone over budget.

Is this how we got to the Fiscal Cliff?

I wonder what would happen if we fell off the Fiscal Cliff. It will probably mean that the Government will be forced to spend a little less. That's it.

It's a good start. Anything is better than this deficit. No country is able to sustain this. Look at Greece!

Our children and grandchildren will be paying back our deficit many years from now. Maybe falling off the Fiscal Cliff is just what we need.

Romney Didn't Inspire Us

The Presidential election came and went in a New York minute. In less than an hour, both Republicans and Democrats were shocked. Everyone thought it was going to be so close. It wasn't.

Why?

Romney didn't inspire us. Plain and simple. It had nothing to do with demographics, the mandate on the Catholic Church, gay rights or even the economy. Romney just didn't inspire us.

Reagan inspired us. His ability to transcend party lines couldn't be quantified. George W Bush had a similar ability, albeit not nearly as special. We liked and trusted him. We gave him two terms.

Obama was the Reagan for the 2008 Democrat party. He inspired us. We gave him a term. He didn't however inspire us in 2012, but neither did Romney. Obama was the incumbent. He won because people didn't want to change. They were uninspired.

Now the Democrat party is trying to eliminate the Republican party. They want to reign Republicans in and turn them into the Democrat party. Democrats are saying that Republicans need to change their focus, and try to get votes from all the different demographics.

We aren't statistics. We're people. We aren't demographics. We're human beings. The Republicans don't need to change, or focus energies on attracting specific demographic blocks. We need a leader who inspires all of us.

Saint Monica (Patron Saint of Disappointing Children)

"Son, nothing in this world now affords me delight. I do not know what there is now for me to do or why I am still here, all my hopes in this world being now fulfilled".
The Conversion of Augustine - St. Monica
Saint Monica, mother of Saint Augustine was born to Christian parents in North Africa, year 333 A.D.
Monica was married at a young age to a man named Patritius who was an alcoholic and considered of bad repute. Patritius however, knew of Monica's piousness and held her in a very high regard. Saint Monica bore 3 of his children, the first being Augustine.
Saint Augustine was never Baptised because Patritius who was a Pagan, did not allow it. Augustine in his childhood was a troublemaker. Monica was forced, according to scripture, to "wrestle with God for his soul" It was during this time that Saint Monica was able to convert Patritius to Christianity and to give up his ways of debauchery. Augustine however fell deeper into sin.
Patritius died shortly after he converted and Monica vowed never to marry again. Monica devoted a great deal of her time to saving Augustine's soul.
Augustine fled to Rome without her knowledge and when she found out, chased after him. During a Divine Vision she recieved, she was told where to find him. When she did find him, she sought the help of a Holy Bishop that gave Augustine his Baptism. She shared six months of peace with him, and he was captured by such great emotion it changed his life. Augustine from that day forward, was prepared to dedicate his life to the service of God.

Saint Mary Magdalen (Patron of Penitent Women)

Prayer of St. Mary Magdalen:
St Mary Magdalene, you came with springing tears to the spring of mercy, Christ; from him your burning thirst was abundantly refreshed through him your sins were forgiven; by him your bitter sorrow was consoled.
My dearest lady, well you know by your own life how a sinful soul can be reconciled with its creator, what counsel a soul in misery needs, what medicine will restore the sick to health.
It is enough for us to understand, dear friend of God, to whom were many sins forgiven, because she loved much.
Most blessed lady, I who am the most evil and sinful of men do not recall your sins as a reproach, but call upon the boundless mercy by which they were blotted out.
This is my reassurance, so that I do not despair; this is my longing, so that I shall not perish.
I say this of myself, miserably cast down into the depths of vice, bowed down with the weight of crimes, thrust down by my own hand into a dark prison of sins, wrapped round with the shadows of darkness.
Therefore, since you are now with the chosen because you are beloved and are beloved because you are chosen of God, 1, in my misery, pray to you, in bliss; in my darkness, I ask for light; in my sins, redemption; impure, I ask for purity.
Recall in loving kindness what you used to be, how much you needed mercy, and seek for me that same forgiving love that you received when you were wanting it. Ask urgently that I may have the love that pierces the heart; tears that are humble; desire for the homeland of heaven; impatience with this earthly exile; searing repentance; and a dread of torments in eternity.
Turn to my good that ready access that you once had and still have to the spring of mercy.
Draw me to him where I may wash away my sins; bring me to him who can slake my thirst; pour over me those waters that will make my dry places fresh. You will not find it hard to gain all you desire from so loving and so kind a Lord, who is alive and reigns and is your friend.
